the weather report, 2004

On January 1st of 2004 I started a collaborative project with Nick Butcher, an American artist who I didn't know and was scheduled to have a show with that summer at an artist space in Indiana. I wrote him an email, introduced myself and suggested that we collaborate on a project together.
At the time, I was living in Frankfurt/Main, Germany and Nick was located in Chicago, Illinois. Our idea started with the weather. We decided to start recording the temperatures in Celsius, of our respected cities, using those numbers to generate a color range which we would later use to make drawings, collages, screenprints or paintings.
We chose Tuesdays as our collection day and we continued to do so for the next 4 months. After collecting the data, we combined our correlating temperatures:

5˚ <—> 10˚ = 510 (27 January 2004)
1˚ <—> 14˚ = 114 (16 March 2004)

We then matched each of our combined numbers with a number on the Pantone Matching System (PMS) which is the industry standard color matching system used in commercial printing. (Originally developed in 1962 by Lawrence Herbert for the cosmetics industry it was adapted for the commercial market in 1963.)
In general, any number that is printed has a numerical equivalent:
Number 510
Red: 235, Green: 192, Blue: 204

Or

Number 114
Red: 249, Green: 222, Blue: 66
From the colors that were generated, we separately made collages, drawings, and paintings by the rules  we had pre-defined. Nick made his works on 81/2” x 11” (standard American size) and I made all of my works on A4 (standard European size). The works were then hung side by side in the show.
